London weather is reliably unreliable, and a wet weekend in Newham with restless kids can feel very long indeed. Here’s our local parents’ shortlist of rainy-day options within 20 minutes of Beckton, Stratford and East Ham — beyond the obvious library trip.
1. Burn off real energy: trampoline parks
Indoor, weather-proof, and the single fastest way to drain a 6-year-old’s battery. The Jump Zone in Beckton runs Open Jump sessions daily from 10am to 7pm with sessions for every age — including a Toddler Takeover for under-5s on weekday mornings, and a quieter SEN session every Sunday at 9am.
2. The Royal Docks waterfront (covered bits)
Even in the rain, the cable car gives you 10 minutes of dry, slightly thrilling views over the docks. Good for breaking up the afternoon when you’ve already done one indoor activity.
3. Stratford’s free museums and galleries
The V&A East Storehouse and the various pop-up exhibitions around East Bank are free, indoor, and don’t expect kids to whisper.
4. Soft play (under-5s)
There are several good soft play options around East Ham and Plaistow. Pack a change of clothes — wet socks happen.
5. The cinema as a last resort
Beckton, Stratford and Romford all have family-friendly cinemas. We list it last because it’s a sit-down activity after a long indoor week — try movement first, screens second.
Our honest order of operations
If we had a wet Saturday tomorrow with a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old, we’d do this: 90-minute Open Jump in the morning to burn the energy, hot lunch, then a quiet hour at home or a short museum visit. Everyone sleeps. Job done.
